So, does anyone know of a community that will give you book recs? Like some of the fic search/genre search ones?

Because lately I've been having urges to read some types of books but really hate flooding my flist with requests.

Like, I really want to read boarding school books. And now, ballet/dancing books. Young adult, mostly.

If there is not a comm, there should be.

(also, if youknow any ballet/dancing books- rec me! and still looking for more boarding school books.)

(and fics in any of my fandoms that fit are welcome too!)

Did I suggest the Series of Unfortunate Events books to you? (They go to a boarding school in one of them, but the whole series is amazing anyway!) Or have you read them already?

I can't help with the comm or the ballet books though. :-/

If you can find them - the Drina series was a childhood favourite for ballet books. I think there's also some boarding school elements as well! My copies of these books are ages old, I think they were originally my mum's. I only have up to Drina Dances in New York, I didn't know there were more!

Boarding school...what Enid Blyton have you read? That (after Harry Potter) is definitely the first name that pops up when you say 'boarding school books'

Random person who caught the words 'boarding school books' in passing.

Have you read any in the Chalet School series?

Here's the Wiki link as a good starting point. these books have an active fandom as well.

The mailing list group Girlsown discusses all sorts of school stories, boarding and day, also ballet books and stuff. I belonged for a few years. I think it's a google group now. The Chalet girls should be able to direct you if that's what you'd like. very active group with memebers in many coutries.

You've read Enid Blyton, right? And I'm the numpty suggesting it (again, I just realised :D). :D She wrote a fair few, as I'm sure you know. (The Naughtiest Girl in the School is well worth a read, if ony to laugh over what Blyton thought was a 'progressive' school. As a boarding school kid, I laughed and laughed and laughed over them. Somewhat bitterly, actually. ^_^)

Also, if you've read Noel Streatfeild's 'Ballet Shoes', that's part of a whole series of 'Shoe' stories - White Boots, Tennis Shoes, Circus Shoes, Dancing Shoes and Theatre Shoes (which is actually almost a sequel to Ballet Shoes, in that it's different kids, but they go to the same stage school and Pauline, Petrova and Posy play a large (though off-page) roll).

It's not quite boarding school, but if you can get your hands on any of the Jill's Gymkhana books, they kind of gently mock boarding school books of the era and they're a lot of fun! Aw, man, this is like my childhood, right there. Lovely. :DDD (Er, sorry if my suggestions are ones you know about and have read and you're there going "OF COURSE I HAVE READ THESE!!")

I used to read 'Mallory Towers' when I was in school. God I wanted to go to boarding school so damn much.
It's an all girls school and lots of them have boyish names <3

Or there's The Worst Witch, which was the first lengthy (imo) book I ever read. You may have read them already, since they're pretty popular kids books, but in case you haven't, it's an all-girl witches academy following Mildred who always screws up and gets into trouble.

Not really in the same line, but I really liked Stephen Fry's autobiography because that's set during his time at boarding school and is really very good to read.
